Unmasking Shou Tucker The Face of Evilīrotherhood and FMA 2003 also differ in how they portray Shou Tucker during the course of the arc. The amount of care that Tucker shows for the boys and the trust they put in him show that in FMA 2003 Shou Tucker is the Elric brothers’ mentor. This care is reciprocated with trust when Ed confides to him his darkest secret: that he and Al attempted to bring back their mother using alchemy - the ultimate taboo - when they were younger. The fact that he invests time and energy to help the brothers succeed and celebrates their accomplishments shows that he cares for them. Once Ed becomes a state alchemist, Shou Tucker takes the time to make a celebratory dinner to congratulate him. He takes on a more proactive role in helping the brothers than in Brotherhood by letting them to stay at his home and providing them with insight on the structure of the state alchemy exam in addition to letting them look through his library and laboratory. As a result, it is easy to infer that Shou Tucker and the Elric brothers are no more than acquaintances who are forced to interact so that the Elric brothers may use his resources.įMA 2003, in contrast makes Shou Tucker a mentor for the brothers. This initial meeting is also the only time that the Elric brothers are shown to talk to Shou Tucker before the transmutation. The transactional and prying nature of the question makes him come across as a distant and unapproachable person. When the brothers first meet Shou Tucker he comes across as cold and standoffish, immediately demanding to know Ed’s reason for wanting to see his research on chimeras, going as far as to ask “… if you want me to show you the tricks I’ve got up my sleeve, it’s only fair you show me the tricks you’ve got up yours…”. In Brotherhood, Shou Tucker is shown to be distant. While Brotherhood portrays Shou Tucker as a distant man, in 2003, he is an important their mentor and therefore an important person in the brothers’ lives. TuckerįMA 2003 and Brotherhood also differ in how they depict Shou Tucker’s relationship to Ed and Al. Shou Tucker and the Elric Brothers You’re such a good man, Dr. Their continued presence, both their day to day lives and during important moments, shows that they have become a part of each other’s lives and that they really care for each other. She and the Elric brothers also help Gracia Hughes deliver her daughter when she unexpectedly goes into labor. She cheers for them when they take the state alchemy exam and is present when Edward passes the practical portion of the exam, effectively witnessing him become a state alchemist. The Elric brothers live with the Tuckers for a few months during which Nina shares many memorable experiences with the brothers. In the 2003 adaptation of Fullmetal alchemist on the other hand, ample time is given to show the close friendship that Nina forms with Ed and Al. Since she doesn’t interact with the brothers outside this one time, she does not come across as a close friend of theirs. The only time she interacts with the brothers is when they play with her while taking a break from their studies. In Brotherhood, Nina’s relationship with the Elric Brothers is explored little. Nina Tucker and the Elric Brothers Better daysįMA 2003 does a better job at showing how close Nina is to the Elric brothers than Brotherhood. While this is obviously a disturbing scene in both adaptations, FMA 2003 does a better job at giving this event more emotional weight by better depicting the close bond between the Elric brothers and the Tucker family than Brotherhood and by slowly revealing Shou Tucker’s true nature throughout the arc. The Tucker Arc Carries More Emotional Weight in FMA 2003įMA 2003 and Brotherhood relied on the same source material when they adapted the Tucker arc and, in both adaptations, the arc ends with Shou Tucker committing the despicable act of transmuting his own daughter, Nina, and pet dog, Alexander, into a chimera. I, however, side with the vocal minority that feels that the FMA 2003 was better and I plan to justify my position in a small series of posts, the first of which is below. Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, which first aired in 2009, was a newer more faithful adaptation of the manga.īoth series are among the best shounen anime produced but the general consensus appears to be that Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood (from now on, Brotherhood) was a better adaptation than the 2003 adaptation (from now on FMA 2003). As fans of the series know, the first adaptation, Fullmetal Alchemist aired in 2003 while the manga had yet to be completed and once the anime caught up to the manga, the anime went on its own path, creating a very different story-line. Fullmetal Alchemist and Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood are two anime adaptations of the best-selling manga of the same name.
